What a concept! Have your “portable” GPS unit function like an in-dash GPS, who wouldn’t want that?
That’s what this box promises and delivers, although the install can be rather involved. My car doesn’t have space for a double-DIN unit, so I opted for the AVIC-F500BT and the ND-G500. I also got the iPod cable and external microphone CD-VM1.
Went with a professional install – the original estimate was 2 hours of labor but it ended up being more like 4 hours. The end results are worth it – I can play radio/cds through my regular stereo but when using Nav or bluetooth calls, the audio is muted and audio from the AVIC-F500BT is cut in. Of course, playing music from the F500BT will also cut out your stereo audio.
When parking my vehicle, I remove the F500BT from its mount and hide away the cables and it looks normal (without navigation).
